Niib is a lifelong resident of the East Lake Community, District II of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. He was raised by his grandparents around the Anishinaabe customs and traditional way of life. Niib is a first language speaker, drum keeper, drum society member of other ceremonial drums, and fourth degree Mide lodge member.

Niib earned a bachelors degree from the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) and was an educator with UMD for 16 years in the American Indian Studies Department teaching Ojibwe language and history. Niib spent the last four years as a professor with the Fond du Lac Tribal & Community College. Prior to becoming an educator, Niib gained experience in tribal government as a District II Representative and as a former Commissioner of Administration for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe.
